2015 has turned out to be a disastrous year for the Arts in Australia. Immense damage has been done through the entire sector in ways that will ripple through the next few years. The MYEFO statement this week took another $53m from the Arts portfolio and $37m from our museums and galleries. What a way to end the year. The only shining light of hope appears to be the existence of the Arts Party.
While a billion dollars a week of our taxes go on military spending, the entire arts sector is being gutted to, at best, save $50m a year. It's just appalling.
We've made a video which is also posted on Facebook. Please watch and share this post or the FB one. Australia's government is clearly not interested in encouraging either the Arts sector directly or the cultural life of this country in any meaningful way.
More and more it is becoming clear that the ONLY way we're going to solve this problem is to hit the politicians where it hurts - at the ballot box. Next year we will be having a FEDERAL ELECTION.
Honestly, it feels like the only way is UP right now.
